On the main level, a fully equipped kitchen with modern appliances connects to a small, open dining area with a table and chairs for four. A separate living room contains a large picture window looks out over the lake, with a comfortable futon couch and cozy reading chairs gathered around the view. Guests also have the convenience of a two-person card table and a writing desk. Hardwood floors in every room keep this cabin looking clean and cozy, with themed rugs adding to both décor and comfort.
Sleeping Arrangements: This cabin offers two private bedrooms with a queen-sized bed in each, as well as the queen-sized futon couch in the main living area.
Grindstone Northshore Getaway is nestled between tall trees on a secluded, shaded property. A wide balcony on the lake-facing side overhangs the yard, with an outdoor dining table and chairs. Below, the lush, grassy lawn centers on a clearing in the trees and a stone fire pit. A wooden staircase descends the side of the hill to the water, continuing out onto Grindstone lake with a long, privately owned pier.
Grindstone Lake covers 3,176 acres in clear water, with a sandy bottom that is great for swimming. Guests can swim and fish from the private pier. Gamefish include pan fish, musky, bass, walleye and pike.
The Hayward is a popular outdoor recreation and adventure destination during all seasons. The region is covered in protected national forest land and more than 55,000 combined acres of lakes, rivers and streams. Visitors to the area can indulge in the vibrant fall colors by taking a scenic drive on backcountry roads, or venture out on foot to spot the native wildlife — timber wolves, black bear, whitetail deer, elk, otters, beaver and more — in the buzzing natural habitats built up in the region’s lakes, forests, bogs and streams. The Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest shelters many hundreds of miles-worth of nature trails, used throughout the year for mountain biking and trail running, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ATVs.
Hayward has a rich racing heritage and is home to some of the north’s most renowned races, including the American Birkebeiner, The Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival and the Mt. Borah Epic. Trout fishing in the local streams is a popular nature tourist activity, as well as hunting — approximately 70 percent of the surrounding forest land is open to the public during the various hunting seasons. With so many acres of open water, Hayward is an excellent place to indulge in water sports, and rentals are available nearby for skiing, sailing, tubing and wake boarding. Prospective visitors should keep an eye on the city events calendar, and perhaps plan a trip around the Lumberjack World Championships.
