  • On Lake Michigan's sandy, swimmable beachfront

The Viking cottage is a waterfront, rustic, quaint wood-slat cottage set between the trees in a small, private clearing on some of Lake Michigan's most beautiful and swimmable private lakeshore. There is a 2-night minimum, except between Memorial Day and Labor Day when we rent by the 6- or 7-night stay, with Friday or Saturday arrival and departure. This cabin sleeps 6 in beds and features a lofted sleeping area (not for unattended little ones) that overlooks an open-concept great room. This includes a cozy sitting area with two sofas and a loveseat. The fireplace is just for looks (after too many close calls over the years, we've had to retire the indoor fire option). Roku/smart channels are usually an option, but a strong signal at all times isn't guaranteed.

A custom staircase (for the surefooted) leads to the upper-level sleeping area, which is furnished with two full-sized beds. A unique arched doorway leads to a fully equipped kitchen. Dishes, dish towels, utensils, and simple cookware are provided so you can comfortably prepare home-cooked meals. The single bathroom has a tub and shower. The downstairs bedroom is furnished with a queen-sized bed.
Bed linens are provided; bring your own bath and beach towels.

The Viking Cottage’s yard is grassy and flat, with an outdoor charcoal grill and off-street parking space for up to two vehicles. It is an easy walk from the cabin door to the sandy shore of Lake Michigan — don’t forget to bring your swimming suit and beach towels! This lake house is a quiet, romantic escape. There is nothing like falling asleep to the crashing waves under a canopy of bright stars and waking to them lapping gently at the shore, sparkling like diamonds, beckoning you to take in an awe-inspiring sunrise.

Unique Features

As a guest at The Viking cottage, you’ll have full access to a clean, sandy beach just a short flip-flop across the one-lane road. Make memories swimming, combing the beach for stones and shells, fishing off the pier, grilling or chasing fireflies.

The Viking enjoys a beautiful, clear view of Lake Michigan, a short flip-flop from the cottage. To make the most of the pleasant, shaded property, you'll have access to lounge chairs and an outdoor charcoal grill. Or, if you’re interested in some sun or stars, there are two picnic tables, a fire pit (byo firewood), and several nice Adirondack chairs (please leave them in place).

Rural cellphone reception, especially along the lake, varies. Most guests report getting calls and texts reliably, with spotty data, but some have little or no coverage. We haven’t had a landline in about a decade. Most smartphones and mobile carriers offer Wi-Fi calling as a feature, allowing you to place and receive calls over a Wi-Fi network (without cell reception and without using your phone’s minutes). That’s what we’ve used for years, and it works great. We recommend you make sure that’s an option on your phone and that you turn it on or inquire ahead of time with your mobile carrier.
Also, many messaging apps, such as WhatsApp, Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, etc., allow voice and video calls in addition to text messaging. As long as you have an internet connection, you can use these apps to make calls to other users of the same app.

Wifi coverage in the cottages allows for emailing and messaging apps (mentioned above). While it usually works very well, it can vary throughout the property and may or may not be sufficient to stream content everywhere or at all times. We’ll do our best, and the internet usually works great, but we’re only human (humans who don’t work in tech) and don’t guarantee you’ll have a strong signal during your stay. If you need a more solid connection, there are coffee shops & the library in town.

Things To Do

Lake Michigan is the big draw for tourists looking for recreation opportunities around Sturgeon Bay. The nearby beach is just across a one-lane road from The Viking Cottage, with a wide sand beach (as of winter '24-this can vary year to year) and a gentle slope to the water’s edge. Guests can swim in the clear water, launch their own kayaks, build sand castles, or just enjoy the sun and fresh air. No lifeguard on duty, and all activities on our property are at your own risk.

A short walk along the shore or road to the north of the cabin takes you to the Sturgeon Bay channel, where you can fish and watch the passing water traffic from the public pier. There is minimal traffic around the cabin, so walking and jogging in the area is safe. The road is narrow, but most drivers are very neighborly and pull aside to let others pass.
Hikers will find plenty to explore, such as the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Nature Preserve up the road or the Door County Land Trust with its more than 445 acres of scenic shoreline, sand dunes, aged forests, and open fields. Trails range in skill level from easy to moderate and provide a stunning view of two local lighthouses.

If you have kids (or even if you don't!), don't miss The Farm-a hands-on petting zoo and historical gem just a few minutes north of Sturgeon Bay. Of course, that's just one of the many, many things to do in Door County. And yes, Sturgeon Bay is in Door County! ;)

About the Owner/Manager

My father and grandfather built the three original buildings that became Firefly Cottages in the 1950s and rented them as Johnson's Cottages on the Beach. These charming, vintage cabins, settled across a quiet road from the sandy shore of Lake Michigan, enjoy a wonderful view of the water.

We aim to provide you with a comfortable, homey vacation cottage with lots of character — a place where you can make lasting memories. Bring your adventurous spirit and enjoy a traditional Door County getaway! Feel free to email or text me (your host, Irene) with questions.
