At Time to Play, we make room for the part of a family vacation that gets squeezed out at home: simply being together. Our playful log cabin near Glen Haven has toys and a children's play area inside, a large shared playground outside, and a Mississippi River view that gives the adults something to get excited about, too. Bring your favorite people and leave a little space in the schedule.
A downstairs bedroom and two upstairs lofts let you sort out sleeping spots before turning your attention to the day's adventures. Cook breakfast in the furnished kitchen, head out onto our 80-acre retreat, then regroup for lunch and a game. Air conditioning and a dishwasher keep things comfortable, and the living-room woodstove makes a cool-weather visit feel like cabin season at its best.
When the playground crowd finally runs low on energy, grill dinner, gather around your firepit or choose a movie together. The optional deck hot tub adds a river-view retreat for your stay. Contact us directly to discuss the bed layout and dates, including a neighboring cabin for more family members. Choosing from 400 DVDs may be the day's toughest group decision.
The main-floor bedroom combines a king bed, a daybed with a trundle and a play area, so families can keep younger children close. Upstairs, one loft has two queen beds and a toddler bed; the second has a king bed. The lofts are open sleeping spaces reached by stairs, giving the cabin a different feel from a house with three enclosed bedrooms.
Game and toy-themed decor makes Time to Play more than a name on the door. The TV/DVD player, games and toys provide ready-made indoor options, while cornhole and deck Jenga take the competition outside. A walk-in shower with a built-in seat, supplied linens and bath towels help simplify packing. Reserve the optional river-view hot tub for $100 per stay if you would like to include it.
Let the first outing be an easy one: our shared playground, a walk on the property's private trails, and a return to the cabin for snacks. A public Mississippi River boat landing is less than a mile away. Ask about kayak rentals with local drop-off and pickup or the locally available six-seat UTV; those are separate rental arrangements, not included cabin equipment.
For a family park day, Wyalusing State Park pairs river overlooks with trails for different energy levels. The 1.5-mile Sugar Maple loop is a longer outing with interpretive signs; a side trail reaches Pictured Rock Cave. Bring walking shoes and check current trail conditions, especially after rain.
Keep a shorter walk in reserve at Nelson Dewey State Park. The 0.2-mile Prairie Trail offers prairie scenery and a Mississippi River view. On a warm day, Wyalusing Public Beach gives your group a swimming option outside the state park; pack for a river beach outing and assess water conditions when you arrive.
When the kids want a different kind of discovery, visit Stonefield in Cassville for historic shops, farm buildings and agricultural machinery. Its seasonal schedule makes a little advance planning worthwhile. Or take a family ride on the Pride of Cassville Ferry: check that day's service and bring cash before heading to the landing.
