At Gruenhagen Bay Lodge, the route from breakfast to the lake is pleasantly short: slide open the door, cross the porch and head out through the lakeside yard. Our Long Lake home in Birchwood puts the water in view from the living area, with a private dock ready for the boat you bring or arrange to rent. It's a comfortable fit for a family or a few friends who would rather spend the day together than coordinate a convoy.
The kitchen and dining table share an open space beside the living room, so whoever is making lunch can still keep up with the conversation. Take your plate outside to the deck, stretch out on the screened porch, or stay in with the gas fireplace after a cool day on the water. There are several good ways to settle in here; claiming the recliner early may be the most competitive one.
Three private bedrooms and two full bathrooms accommodate up to six guests. Air conditioning, WiFi and a washer and dryer help with the practical side of a lake trip, while the yard and firepit draw everyone back outdoors as evening arrives. Up to two dogs may join you with our prior approval and an additional fee. Bring your own bath and beach towels, along with your usual toiletries and laundry detergent.
The wide screened porch runs along the lake-facing side of the home, giving you a sheltered place to sit with the water beyond the trees. A separate open deck holds an outdoor dining set, and steps lead down to the lawn and shoreline. Indoors, the living room's stone-faced gas fireplace and the jetted bathtub offer two more ways to wind down without making plans to leave the cabin.
If your family gathering needs a little more separation, ask about also reserving Bear Cub, the neighboring two-bedroom cabin. Each home is booked separately and subject to availability, so we can help you work through the dates before everyone starts assigning bedrooms. Gruenhagen Bay Lodge itself remains a six-guest rental, with parking space for boat, ATV or snowmobile trailers.
Make Long Lake your first outing. Fish for walleye, bass, northern pike or panfish, swim from the shoreline, or use our private dock as the starting point for time on the water. Pontoon rentals are available separately; ask us for rental contacts and confirm launch and docking plans before your trip. Long Lake Bait & Tackle at County Highway B and Blackhawk Road is a useful stop for bait, supplies and separately arranged boat or water-sport rentals.
For an easy family walk, head to Hunt Hill Nature Center in Sarona. Its 0.3-mile Barred Owl/Discovery Trail has a few small hills and a monthly search for hidden themed objects. For a longer woodland outing, try the Bear Trail: the full route with its connecting trails exceeds 2.5 miles and passes views of four glacial lakes. Trails are open during daylight hours without a required hiking fee; leashed dogs are welcome, and snowshoeing is an option in winter.
Birchwood also gives you access to the Tuscobia State Trail. In town, it parallels Highway 48, with parking along city streets. Choose a walking outing or plan an ATV ride on the permitted section toward the east; the ATV route extends west only as far as the Red Cedar Lake Bridge. Check current county trail conditions and seasonal closures before riding. Ask us about the best trailhead and trailer parking for your plans.
When a museum afternoon sounds appealing, visit Railroad Memories Museum in Spooner's historic depot. Thirteen rooms of railway artifacts and an HO-scale model of the old rail yard give curious kids and railroad fans plenty to inspect. The regular season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with selected weekday and Saturday hours; check the current schedule before heading over.
