When you arrive at Cabin 4, you’ll instantly notice its incredible position along the shoreline of Big Chetac Lake. This cottage sits steps from the water with a private pier just outside the door, so you can greet the morning sun or watch the moonrise reflected across the lake. A spacious screened porch (10 by 24 feet) faces east to take advantage of those views and offers a bug‑free place to sip coffee, share meals or unwind after a day on the water.
Inside, the cabin is designed to make families and fishing buddies feel at home. Two carpeted bedrooms provide a queen bed in one room and a full bed in the other, with plenty of space for storing clothes. A sleeper sofa in the living room expands the sleeping options so you can comfortably host up to six guests. The bathroom has a combination tub and shower, vanity and toilet, and we provide the paper products you need.
Preparing meals is easy thanks to a fully equipped kitchen with a full‑size refrigerator, a gas stove, and all the cookware and utensils you need. Gather around the full dining table with six chairs for family meals or late‑night card games. After dinner, relax in the living room where two plush recliners invite you to put your feet up. There’s also a large couch, a picture window that frames the lake, and a 32‑inch flat‑screen TV with a robust channel lineup for rainy days.
Unique Features
What sets Cabin 4 apart is its direct relationship to the lake. Few cabins offer such an expansive screened porch overlooking the water plus a mini deck and private pier just outside your door. You can step outside to cast a line or settle into the cedar swing on the porch while watching eagles soar over Big Chetac. The screened space allows you to enjoy fresh air without swatting mosquitos, and it’s large enough for everyone to gather.
Inside, you’ll find comforts you don’t always see in a classic Northwoods cabin: two cushy Lazy Boy recliners, a sofa sleeper, and a flat‑screen TV with premium channels for movie nights. The kitchen isn’t a cramped kitchenette but a full‑size space with a gas range and full refrigerator, plus a dining table that seats six comfortably. These touches make Cabin 4 feel more like a home than a rental while still retaining its rustic charm.
Things To Do
At the resort there’s plenty to keep you busy between fishing trips. Kids love the sandy play area with a jungle gym and swings, and there’s an authentic maypole from the 1920s schoolhouse for anyone feeling nostalgic. Anglers appreciate the well‑equipped fish cleaning house with stainless steel tables and hot and cold water, plus bait, freezer paper and a freezer for their catch. Bring your own boat and dock it at your pier at no charge, or rent one of ours with a motor or extra life jackets.
Golfers will find no shortage of fairways to explore: at least seven 18‑hole courses lie within a half‑hour drive of the resort, and one is just five minutes away on the outskirts of Birchwood. If you prefer to stretch your legs on land, hop on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail as it meanders through Birchwood or wander along quiet forest roads where deer and other wildlife are often spotted.
For more adventure, rent an ATV in town and tackle the Tuscobia Trail system or the many spurs it connects to—just remember to pick up a map so you don’t lose your way. On hot days you can swim right off your pier or head to Doolittle Park’s public beach on Birch Lake for a change of scenery. When you’re ready for town life, Birchwood offers antique shops, a grocery and hardware store, a bank and post office, and several dining options including cafés, a pizza den and local taverns. If you’re up for a day trip, the town of Hayward lies about half an hour away with tourist‑oriented attractions and unique shops.

Reviews
Our stay at Cabin 4 was amazing. The screened porch gave us stunning sunrise views over Big Chetac Lake and the cabin’s full kitchen and comfortable furnishings made it feel like home. We loved fishing from the private pier and relaxing by the campfire in the evenings. – Emily K.
Our family had a fantastic vacation at Red School Resort. Cabin 4 was clean and spacious, the kids loved the play area and we enjoyed exploring nearby hiking trails and golf courses. The owners were friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. – Johnson Family.
Red School Resort is run by Rich, Donna and Tony Manning, who purchased the property in 1986 and have been welcoming guests ever since. Their mission has always been to provide comfortable, well‑supplied vacation homes with a mix of vintage charm and modern convenience.
The resort gets its name from the three‑room schoolhouse built on the property in the 1920s; the Mannings restored the old structure and live next door, so they’re never far if you have a question. They’ll help you launch your boat, point you toward the best fishing spots and share stories of the resort’s history, but they also respect your privacy and let you enjoy your time on the lake.
