Cabin 5 is perfectly positioned along the wooded shoreline of Big Chetac Lake. A private pier just steps from the door and a small deck give you front‑row seating for sun‑and‑moon rises over the water. The highlight of this northwoods retreat is a 10×24 screened porch facing east where you can sip coffee in the morning, listen to the loons and watch boats drift by.
Inside, the two‑bedroom cabin blends rustic charm with modern comfort. One bedroom has a single and full‑size bed; the second has a single and a queen, both with plenty of storage. A full kitchen with a gas range, full‑size refrigerator, cookware and tableware lets you prepare anything from pancakes to a Friday night fish fry. The dining area seats six comfortably for family meals or a late‑night card game.
A cozy living room invites you to unwind after a day on the lake. Two Lazy Boy recliners and a cushy couch that converts to a double bed provide seating for everyone. A 32‑inch flat‑screen TV with 150 channels, air conditioning, Wi‑Fi and carpeting throughout create a home‑like atmosphere. The bathroom includes a shower and vanity, and the screened porch has a cedar swing and table and chairs, making this cabin an ideal lakeside hideaway for families or fishing friends.
Unique Features
Cabin 5 stands apart because of its waterfront setting and generous screened porch. Facing east, the porch offers unobstructed views of Big Chetac Lake, making it the perfect place to catch brilliant sunrises or watch the moon reflect on the water. The cabin’s private pier lets you dock a boat just outside your door and fish whenever inspiration strikes.
Inside, you’ll find touches that make this cabin feel like a true northwoods escape. The mix of single, full and queen beds accommodates groups of all shapes; a sofa sleeper in the living room adds extra sleeping space. Two Lazy Boy recliners, air conditioning, Wi‑Fi, a flat‑screen TV and a fully equipped kitchen ensure everyone feels at home. The cedar swing and mini deck add to the cabin’s charm, providing plenty of spaces to relax rain or shine.
Things To Do
Red School Resort has something for every member of the family. On the grounds you’ll find a sandy play area with a jungle gym, swing and the original 1920s maypole for the young at heart. Bring your boat and use your private pier at no extra cost, or rent one of our boats or motors; we also provide life jackets and extra boats. A fish‑cleaning house with stainless‑steel tables, running water and freezers makes it easy to prepare your catch of bluegill, crappie or walleye.
The surrounding area invites exploration. Several 18‑hole golf courses are within 30 minutes, with one just five minutes from Birchwood. Hikers can wander quiet forest roads or hop on the Ice Age Trail that passes through Birchwood. For more adventure, rent an ATV in town and ride the Tuscobia Trail and the many spurs it connects. When summer heats up, swim in Big Chetac Lake or visit Doolittle Park’s beach on Birch Lake.
Birchwood and nearby Hayward offer plenty of dining, shopping and entertainment. Browse antique and junk shops, pick up groceries and supplies, and enjoy a café, pizza parlor and local taverns. Day trips to Hayward (about 30 miles north) provide access to museums, festivals and unique attractions. However you spend your days, Cabin 5 is the perfect base for a relaxed northwoods vacation.

Reviews
Our family absolutely loved Cabin 5. Waking up early to watch the sunrise from the screened porch became our favorite ritual, and the kids enjoyed fishing off the private pier every evening – Mike T.
We’ve stayed at many northwoods resorts, but Cabin 5 at Red School Resort is something special. The cabin was spotless and well-equipped, and the owners treated us like old friends – Sarah K.
Cabin 5 gave us the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure. We spent our days exploring local ATV trails and evenings grilling on the deck and relaxing in the cedar swing – John and Emily R.
Red School Resort is owned and operated by Rich, Donna and Tony Manning. We purchased this historic property in 1986 and have spent decades preserving its charm while adding modern comforts. As long‑time residents, we know the lakes and forests intimately and are always happy to point you toward the best fishing spots or hiking trails. We’ll check you in, help launch or retrieve your boat, and then step back so you can enjoy the peace of the northwoods in your own way. Our goal is to provide a clean, comfortable cabin and a warm welcome so guests return year after year.
