Cabin 7 is our newest and largest vacation home at Red School Resort, offering roughly 1,200 square feet of Northwoods‑modern comfort. Set just off the shoreline of Big Chetac Lake with its own pier and an unobstructed lake view, this spacious retreat is ideal for big families or fishing friends looking to spread out. Guests enjoy a quiet, forested setting within our multi‑cabin resort yet remain only steps from the water, where the call of loons and the rustle of pines provide a relaxing soundtrack.
Inside, Cabin 7 features three roomy bedrooms furnished with a combination of queen, full‑size and twin beds plus ample closets and dressers. A full bath with tub, shower and vanity and a separate half bath make mornings easy for groups. The fully equipped kitchen includes a large refrigerator, microwave, full‑size gas stove, dishwasher and generous cabinets and counter space for meal prep. When it’s time to unwind, gather in the open living room with two recliners, a large sofa and a flat‑screen TV with hundreds of digital and premium channels, or stream your favorite music over the complimentary Wi‑Fi.
A large screened‑in porch with a cedar swing extends your living space outdoors, while central air conditioning keeps things comfortable inside. Step outside to grill on the Weber, share stories around the fire pit or head down to the private pier to cast a line or dock your boat. Though Cabin 7 is set slightly back from the shoreline for privacy, it still delivers beautiful lake views and direct access to Big Chetac’s clear waters. Whether you’re planning a week‑long fishing trip or a multigenerational getaway, this cabin offers space, comfort and the rustic charm that our guests return for year after year.
What sets Cabin 7 apart is its generous size and thoughtful layout. At roughly 1,200 square feet, it comfortably sleeps up to 10 guests with four full‑size beds, two twins and an additional queen—making it perfect for extended families, fishing parties or a group of friends. It’s the only cabin on our property with both a full bathroom and a separate half bath, so there’s no waiting in line when everyone is getting ready for the day. The fully outfitted kitchen even includes a dishwasher for easy cleanup, a rarity at many Northwoods rentals.
Another highlight is the cabin’s balance of privacy and lake access. Although Cabin 7 sits just off the water, it still boasts a broad lake view through the trees and its own private pier for boating and fishing. The screened porch is a favorite gathering spot, complete with a cedar swing and table for playing cards or watching summer storms roll in without the mosquitoes. Add in Lazy Boy recliners, high‑speed Wi‑Fi, a 32‑inch flat‑screen television with premium channels and air conditioning, and you have a vacation home that blends rustic charm with modern comforts.
On the resort grounds you’ll find plenty to keep everyone entertained. Our large sandy play area has a jungle gym, swing set and even the original maypole from the 1920s schoolhouse—kids and nostalgic adults alike love to see it spin. Guests are welcome to bring their own boat or motor and dock it at Cabin 7’s pier at no extra charge, or you can rent extra boats, motors, life jackets and even a pontoon right on‑site. After a successful day on the water, take advantage of our well‑equipped fish‑cleaning house with stainless‑steel tables, hot and cold running water, freezer paper and dedicated freezers for your catch and for heads and skins.
Big Chetac Lake itself offers nearly 1,900 acres of water connected to Birch and Little Birch Lakes. Known as the Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin, it’s teeming with bluegill, crappie, perch, bass, walleye and northern pike. Launch a boat from our private ramp, fish from your pier, explore the lake by kayak or simply enjoy a swim in the clear water. Early mornings often bring glass‑smooth conditions perfect for canoeing and paddleboarding; evenings are made for sunset cruises and watching the stars reflect off the lake.
Away from the shoreline, the Birchwood area provides miles of trails and plenty of attractions. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail passes through town, offering quiet forest roads where you might spot deer and songbirds. Rent an ATV or snowmobile in Birchwood to explore the Tuscobia and other trail networks that spider through the county; be sure to pick up a map so you don’t get turned around in the woods. Golfers will appreciate the seven 18‑hole courses within a half‑hour drive, with one just five minutes away.
For a change of pace, head into Birchwood to browse junk and antique shops, pick up groceries or catch a classic Northwoods Friday fish fry. Take the kids to Doolittle Park’s sandy beach on Birch Lake for a day of swimming and playground fun. The nearby town of Hayward, about 30 minutes north, is filled with tourist‑oriented attractions and events, while local festivals like Birchwood’s Bluegill Festival celebrate the area’s fishing heritage. Whatever your interests, you’ll find plenty of adventures within an easy drive of your cabin.

Spacious and clean! Our family of nine had a wonderful stay at Cabin 7. The kids loved the sandy play area, volleyball and maypole, and we were able to dock our boat right at the private pier. We loved cooking in the well-stocked kitchen and relaxing on the screened porch with the cedar swing. Johnson Family
Cabin 7 is perfect for a fishing getaway. We caught plenty of bluegill and crappie off the pier and spent evenings around the fire pit. The cabin’s three bedrooms and open living area gave everyone plenty of space, and the dishwasher was a great bonus after meals. Alan P.
Friendly owners and spotless cabins. We appreciate the quiet, wooded setting and the lake views from the porch, plus the modern amenities like WiFi and air conditioning. We will definitely return to Red School Resort. Mary S.

Red School Resort has been welcoming guests to the shores of Big Chetac Lake since 1986. As a family‑owned and operated property, we take pride in offering Northwoods‑modern vacation homes that are comfortable, well‑supplied and steeped in local history. Our name comes from the original three‑room schoolhouse built on the property in 1926; we lived in the converted schoolhouse when we first bought the resort and have lovingly maintained its spirit ever since.
Owners Rich, Donna and Tony Manning personally oversee the resort, from greeting guests on check‑in to maintaining the grounds and providing a free boat launch service. We remodel each cabin carefully, preserving the vintage paneling and charm while adding modern conveniences and keeping our rates reasonable. Our goal is simple: to give you a quiet, relaxing place to make memories with family and friends. We’re available when you need us, yet happy to let you enjoy your stay in peace—just like we would want on our own vacation.
