A family reunion works better when everyone has room to gather—and somewhere to retreat when the card game gets loud. At our BarrelHouse on Pine Lake in Baldwin, the main house and separate Barrel Nook give your group two buildings to settle into, with the lake as the meeting place. The curved roof and tall windows make the great room feel like part of the landscape, whether you arrive to green trees or a snowy shoreline.
Start with breakfast around the kitchen and dining spaces, then let the day branch out: a seasonal paddle, a book by the windows or a spirited ping-pong match upstairs. Later, the courtyard’s wood-fired pizza oven gives dinner a little audience participation. There is room for a movie in the theater while another part of the group keeps the conversation going by the fire.
Come evening, take your turn in the seven-seat hot tub beside its wood-burning fireplace, or warm up in the indoor infrared sauna. Our seven-bedroom arrangement accommodates up to 20 guests, with four full baths and two half baths across the property. This is a year-round home for family and friend getaways, with space to share a weekend without requiring everyone to share the same schedule.
Architect Michael Huber’s barrel-roof design pairs steel and stone with warm wood, glass catwalks and a great room anchored by a soaring fireplace. The games are spread out, too: ping-pong and foosball occupy the loft, while the seven-foot pool table is in the heated garage. A separate office with a desk and chair gives the person sneaking in a work call a place to land.
The Barrel Nook provides two bedrooms, a full bath and a kitchenette apart from the five-bedroom main house. Several sleeping spaces have distinctive layouts, including open upper walls in the children’s rooms; review the floor plans when assigning rooms. Outside, choose the deck’s gas grill or the courtyard pizza oven. The private dock and watercraft are seasonal, generally Memorial Day through Labor Day, with weather-dependent extensions—ask us what will be available for your dates.
Pine Lake can fill a whole cabin day. In season, use the private dock and ask us about the available kayaks and paddleboards, then bring the group back for a lakeside fire with the supplied firewood. Bring your own boat if that is your preferred way to explore; the public launch is separate from our dock.
For a family outing with a different pace, arrange a session at Pine Lake Pastures, a horse farm north of Baldwin. Its private and group lessons serve new and experienced riders, and its meet-and-greet experience introduces visitors to grooming and handling horses. Book with the farm separately and discuss ages and riding experience when making plans.
At Willow River State Park near Hudson, pick the walk that suits your group. Hidden Ponds is a half-mile paved interpretive trail behind the Nature Center. For the falls, the 0.4-mile Willow Falls Hill trail starts at the Willow Falls parking lot on County Road A; that is the trail’s one-way length, and the hill is very steep. The longer 1.4-mile Trout Brook loop offers a fairly level walk through pine stands and prairie from the beach parking area.
Golfers can reserve a round at Pheasant Hills in Hammond, an 18-hole, par-72 course with several tee choices and a driving range for a shorter outing. Winter brings a different itinerary: ask us about the property’s snowmobile connection and check current county trail openings before riding. The sauna and theater make satisfying destinations when your group votes for staying in.
