At the Northwoods Bear Lakehouse in Turtle Lake, the lake view sets the pace and the game tables keep the younger—and more competitive—members of the family occupied. Our great room opens beneath a 20-foot wood ceiling, with a stone gas fireplace and windows facing Elbow Lake. Pull up a chair, keep an eye out for waterfowl and let the whole group arrive in its own time.
Four queen bedrooms and a loft with a queen futon give up to ten guests options for settling in. The open kitchen keeps the cook connected to the conversation, and the loft’s Infinity digital game table makes it easy to squeeze in one more round. Younger guests have their own clubhouse with books and toys; adults may discover that the clubhouse has rather good taste.
Outside, there is a firepit with supplied firewood, space to eat together and a seven-seat hot tub overlooking the water. Elbow Lake is a shallow, vegetation-rich environmental lake, best approached as a setting for views and wildlife rather than a swimming or motorboating destination. Plan those bigger water days on nearby recreational lakes, then come home to the quieter shoreline.
The house has three full bathrooms, so a group can spread out at shower time as well as bedtime. A furnished loft links the sleeping and gathering areas, and the game collection continues in the converted garage with pool, ping-pong and arcade play. That garage is a three-season, partially insulated space; bring a coat for winter games rather than expecting the warmth of the main house.
More than 250 feet of Elbow Lake shoreline provides a front-row seat to seasonal changes. Paddling depends on water levels and aquatic vegetation, and seasonal watercraft may carry additional fees; ask us before counting on equipment or open water. The hot tub may close during sustained subzero temperatures or severe weather. Free parking has room for an RV or boat trailer, within the six-vehicle limit.
Start at home with a hot-tub soak, a round at the Infinity game table or a quiet spell watching birds along Elbow Lake. For a full boating or fishing day, take your own boat to Upper Turtle Lake instead. Wisconsin DNR identifies public landings there, including access off Highway 8 at Wayside Park; the lake supports panfish, bass, northern pike and walleye. Our shoreline does not provide a boat route to Upper Turtle Lake.
For a day on foot, head to Wisconsin’s Interstate Park in St. Croix Falls. The 0.4-mile Pothole loop pairs river-gorge views with rock cavities carved by glacial meltwater. Short does not mean smooth: expect uneven ground and stone stairs. The 0.75-mile Skyline Nature loop provides a longer interpretive alternative from the Ice Age Center, where exhibits explain the landscape.
In winter, Trollhaugen in Dresser offers skiing, snowboarding and a separate snow-tubing option. Check the current snow report, lesson availability and tubing sessions before setting off so beginners and practiced skiers can plan different parts of the day.
Snowmobilers can ask us about the adjoining Barron County trail connection and plan their route around current openings. Back at the house, a pot of supper and a garage pool match make an easy evening; winter players will want an extra layer. Keep the firepit gathering within the quiet hours so the lake stays restful for the neighbors, too.
