Our May-through-October cottage at Hillcrest brings together the pleasures of a Northwoods resort stay and a place that feels like your own cabin for the week.
Inside, wood-paneled walls, timber-style furnishings and cabin quilts keep the mood comfortably Up North. The open kitchen and living area let the cook stay in the conversation, while a gas-burning stove adds a cozy focal point when the evening turns cool. Three bedrooms give your group places to settle in after a day outdoors; the living room also has a futon sleeper.
Make breakfast in your kitchen, head down to the water, then bring supper outside to the picnic table. There is a charcoal grill and a firepit with firewood for the evening shift. Up to two dogs are welcome with a fee, so your four-legged vacation planner can come along. Maple's long screened porch extends the living space toward the lake, with room to eat, talk or simply watch the water. Sliding doors connect it to the main gathering area, making the porch part of daily cabin life. The wood interior and straightforward, open layout suit a family that would rather spend the day outside than manage an elaborate vacation house.
Guests have access to Hillcrest's canoe and kayaks, plus the resort's sandy swimming shoreline. Bed linens are supplied, along with a furnished kitchen, microwave, coffee maker, WiFi and DirecTV. Bring your own bath and beach towels, toiletries, toilet paper and other paper products. A little room in the packing list leaves a lot more room for an easy stay.
Start at Big St. Germain Lake with a paddle using the available canoe or kayaks, or spend time by the sandy resort shore. Anglers can plan around musky, walleye, northern pike and panfish on this 1,622-acre lake. Bringing a boat? Confirm docking arrangements with us and consult the public landing information before arrival.
For an easy family walk, try Awassa Nature Preserve. Its level, shaded loops pass mature trees, and the Story Hike gives younger walkers something to look for along the way. Use the trailhead at the end of Trailhead Way, reached from Eaglewatch Court off Highway 70; choose your loop at the trail map to match everyone's energy.
Bring bicycles for the paved St. Germain Bike & Hike Trail. A useful starting point is the Bike & Hike Park behind the Chamber at Highways 70 and 155. Ride a comfortable out-and-back or connect with the wider Heart of Vilas trail system, allowing time for the return rather than treating the whole network as one short loop.
On a rainy afternoon, the Snowmobile Hall of Fame offers racing sleds, prototypes and memorabilia that tell a very Northwoods story. Regular museum hours are Thursday and Friday 10–5 and Saturday 10–3; check the current schedule before heading over. You can appreciate the machines even when your own preferred speed is a slow paddle.
