Some groups arrive with fishing rods. Others bring golf clubs, bike helmets or a very serious opinion about trail conditions. At our Tiger Musky home in downtown Sayner, those vacation plans can share one address. This four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath getaway sleeps up to 10, with shops and the Sayner Pub within walking distance and Plum Lake's public pier nearby. We're off water, so lake time starts with an outing from the house.

Inside, wood floors, broad windows and a stone fireplace give the living room an easy, settled-in feel. Bring breakfast through from the kitchen, spread out with a book or make the Smart TV your rainy-evening plan. The separate bedrooms give your group places to retreat after a day together, while WiFi and air conditioning keep everyday comforts close.

Slide open the door to the deck, put supper on the grill and let the evening stretch toward the firepit. Dogs are welcome with approval and a pet fee, and the fenced yard is a useful bonus for a family stay. Winter cabintimers can reach the snowmobile trails right from the property when trails are open. Whether your crew comes for summer riding or winter sledding, Sayner is right outside the door.

Unique Features

Tiger Musky has the character of an established village home: a street-facing entrance, warm wood trim, a kitchen with glass-front cabinets and a dining area beside the deck doors. The kitchen includes a dishwasher, so the person who volunteers to cook doesn't automatically inherit every plate. Exposed ceiling beams and vintage paddles bring a playful Northwoods touch to a TV sitting area.

Our two-car garage adds covered parking to this downtown Sayner base, and the in-home washer and dryer help with repeat trail days and longer stays. The combination is handy for a group that wants to unpack once and explore in several directions. Public lake access, local businesses and the golf course are part of the surrounding community; this home's own outdoor space is its yard and deck.

Things To Do

Start with time in the yard, then head to the Plum Lake public pier on Plum Lake Drive for fishing or a swim. There's also a public boat landing there for outings on the water; Tiger Musky does not have its own dock. For a different kind of green, nearby Plum Lake Golf Club has a nine-hole, par-36 course over rolling ground; arrange a tee time with the club during its playing season.

Bring your bikes for the paved Heart of Vilas trail system. Sayner's access point at Froelich Drive and Highway N, behind the log building, makes a useful place to begin. Choose a short out-and-back with your own turnaround, or plan a longer ride toward the Crystal Lake and Big Muskellunge Lake areas. The route south to St. Germain is about 12 miles one way, so allow for the return trip rather than treating that as a short family loop.

For a more rugged outing, drive to the Razorback Ridges trailhead at 3129 Razorback Road. The hiking and mountain-bike network includes challenging singletrack, and leashed dogs are welcome on the summer trails. Winter brings groomed cross-country ski routes and marked snowshoe loops, with restrooms and a warming building at the trailhead. Choose a loop from the current map and check trail conditions before setting out.

Give an indoor morning to the Vilas Historical Museum on Highway 155 in Sayner, where logging exhibits, old outboard motors and Carl Eliason's early snowmobile connect the area's past with the adventures outside. It's a seasonal attraction, generally late May through September, with limited weekly opening days; check its current schedule when planning. In winter, our direct snowmobile access makes the house a practical starting point, with rides dependent on official trail openings and conditions.
