We’re giving Wood Duck a whole new season of cabin time: our Round Lake retreat is now available year round, including the upcoming winter season! Bring your family or riding buddies for snowmobiling, ice fishing and cross-country skiing, then come back to a cabin with the sociable spirit of the resort pub it once was. Our original walnut bar is still a natural gathering place, whether you’re spreading out breakfast or comparing the day’s adventures.
Our three-bedroom cabin sleeps six, with a queen bed and electric fireplace in the primary bedroom, two twin beds in the second bedroom, and twin-over-twin bunks in the third. The living area has a gas fireplace, comfortable seating and satellite TV, and the kitchen keeps meals close to the conversation. A full bathroom with a tub/shower combination and an additional half bath help keep everyone’s morning moving.
The Pike Lake Chain remains a big part of a Wood Duck stay in every season. Summer guests can use the resort’s rowboats, canoes and kayaks, spend time at the sandy beach or gather by the shared fire pit. Fall brings another reason to explore the surrounding woods, and now winter guests can settle in for more than a day trip. Bring the season’s favorite outdoor gear; we’ll provide the cabin.
Wood Duck pairs its old-pub personality with a particularly useful setup for snowmobilers. We have drive-up access for sleds, parking for multiple snowmobiles and trailers, and a large area for suits and gear. That extra space makes a difference when everyone comes in wearing half a closet. Inside, wood paneling and the original bar, now incorporated into the kitchen, preserve the cabin’s connection to its gathering-place past.
For a larger get-together, rent Wood Duck and Eagle Lodge together. The cabins share a wall, keeping your group next door while adding another cabin’s bedrooms, kitchen and gathering space. We offer $100 off the total price when both cabins are rented for the same stay, making this an option for family gatherings, riding groups and special events. Contact us directly to talk through the arrangement and plan your dates.
Our trail location lets you build a winter trip around Price County’s approximately 500-mile snowmobile network. Plan a local ride or follow connections into neighboring Rusk, Sawyer, Taylor and Lincoln counties. Local clubs keep these routes maintained, including the Fifield Sno Drovers, part of the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs (AWSC) community. Forest trails, marked frozen-lake crossings and former railroad grades bring variety to the ride. Use current trail maps and club reports, and ride only when routes are officially open.
There’s plenty of forest to explore around the Pike Lake area. The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest covers more than 1.5 million acres, including roughly 860,000 acres on the Chequamegon side of northern Wisconsin. For cross-country skiing on groomed trails, choose Wintergreen Trail east of Fifield, with classic and skate-ski options over rolling terrain. For snowshoeing or backcountry skiing, consider the ungroomed Round Lake Trail. Its historic logging dam and interpretive walking trail also make a worthwhile outing when the snow is gone. A National Forest parking fee applies at both trailheads.
Ice fishing gives your group another way to enjoy winter on Round Lake without making every day a sled day. Bring your fishing equipment and check local ice conditions before venturing out. In open-water season, this 748-acre lake offers fishing for walleye, musky, smallmouth bass and northern pike, along with boating on the Pike Lake Chain. Resort docking and a fish-cleaning house with running water and a freezer make it convenient to bring your own boat and spend more of the day fishing.
When nobody volunteers for kitchen duty, we have several nearby places to put on your outing list: The Big Dipper is approximately 1.5 miles away, Moose Jaw Resort’s Woods Edge Restaurant & Bar about 2 miles, and Musky Jacks about 3.5 miles. Woods Edge overlooks Round Lake, while Musky Jacks sits on Pike Lake. All three are familiar stops in the local snowmobiling community. Check their current hours and your route before heading out for a meal.
